PART A: USING WebCT for PRIVATE THREADED DISCUSSIONS
Our main use of WebCT
in BIO 2500 will be to give your cooperative learning group access to a
"room" in which to conduct threaded discussions in private as a group, and also to provide a
public forum in which you can present significant summaries and developments for the benefit of the whole class. I have posted some specific instructions for you to read in your
WebCT. Here is how to get there to read them and to begin communicating
with your cooperative learning group:
First determine
the designator for your cooperative learning group. Groups are designated
by lab section # and an alphabetic designator - e.g. 1-A, 1-B, etc.
See the BIO 2500 Home Page under "Cooperative Learning Group" to identify name of your group and its members.
Second, from
the BIO 2500 Home Page, click on WebCT and complete the login process.
NOTE:
Use your existing CedarNet ID (s+ID number) and your password on CedarNet.
If you want to change your password for CedarNet and WebCT, then you need
to go to CedarInfo. There is a link under "Individual (General) Transactions" that allows you to change passwords.
Third, select "BIO 2500 General Botany" and click on "Communication
Tools" and then, "Discussions." There, you should find your cooperative learning group designated as noted
above along with a group for the whole class, called "Main." You
should see one message "Welcome to WebCT..." from me with some specific
suggestions for use of WebCT.
Photos
and names of members of each group can be viewed by returning to the
WebCT BIO 2500 Homepage and selecting "Course Content and Related Materials,"
then "Cooperative Learning Groups." [Note: This may still be under construction.]
PART B: OBTAINING POWER POINT SLIDES VIA WebCT
For certain lectures, I will be making the Power Point slides available through WebCT rather than providing them via direct internet links because of copyright restrictions. From the WebCT BIO 2500 Homepage select "Course Content and Related Materials" and then "Lecture Slides and Things." I will be advising you specifically as to how to get the most out of these slides, but they are not intended as a substitute for completing reading assignments or attending and participating in lecture.

PART C:
POSTING TOPIC SUMMARIES IN WebCT
On the "Discussions" page of WebCT and below the links to your private discussion groups, you will see specific topics within which you can post summaries and other information that you deem useful to the whole class in a public forum, and to which others may wish to respond. In all of our communications, whether in WebCT or in person, let us be careful to follow biblical principles of respect and edification of one another. In this way, each will feel welcome to express opinions and questions even on difficult issues in an atmosphere that is welcoming and encouraging.
